The New Mexico State Archives has chosen Lure of the Land: Records, Promises, and Politics as the theme for this year’s celebration. A daylong symposium on land issues, two afternoon film screenings of Sallie Wagner’s 16mm home movies filmed at the Wide Ruins Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation and various other New Mexico locations, and a film screening of the Katahdin production: Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action will highlight the 2005 Archives Week celebration. |

The New Mexico State Archives and the Santa Fe Film Festival present selections from the Sallie Wagner Home Movie Collection, 1928-1950s, recently preserved through support from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Beginning in 1938, Ms. Wagner and her then husband Bill Lippincott took over the Wide Ruins Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation where they lived and worked throughout the World War II years. Ms. Wagner proved to be a skillful amateur filmmaker who documented life on the trading post and on the reservation with her 16mm camera which she kept ready to go in her saddle bag. These short films, which Ms. Wagner also edited, provide a rare glimpse into the social life of the Navajo people and what life was like for some of the earliest non-native residents on the Navajo Reservation. She also filmed various Indian Pueblos, villages, ruins and events in New Mexico. Ms. Wagner is scheduled to attend and to provide live narration/comments for the silent films.Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action

The Navajo Nation Museum presents the Katahdin production Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action. This documentary explores the efforts of Native Peoples to safeguard their land from the ravages of exploitation by telling the stories of five individuals including Mitchell and Rita Capitan. The Capitans founded ENDAUM (Eastern Navajo Dineh Against Uranium Mining) a non-profit organization committed to educating community members and finding new ways to stop uranium mining in the Eastern Navajo Agency.Land Symposium (click for schedule in .pdf format)

In recognition of the centrality of land and land records to the history and culture of New Mexico a day of symposia on land issues is scheduled. A full day consisting of three formal sessions, exhibits by the National Archives (NARA) and various other repositories, as well as a brown bag lunch with the panelists. Participants include the Center for Land Grant Studies, a non-profit organization dedicated to land research. The Center is working to produce summaries of the appeals and adjudications pertaining to each of the approximately 275 documented land grants in New Mexico. Juan Sanchez, land grant heir as well as President of the Board of Trustees of the Chilili Land Grant will participate in the symposium along with Malcolm Ebright, attorney, historian, and President of the Center. Additional presenters and sessions will be posted on the SRCA web site as they are confirmed.Schedule is subject to change.
